BOOKMARK BY SAM STEPHENSON

Sam Stephenson first started developing an appreciation for image-making as a teenager working in his neighbour's darkroom and has been photographing his friends for almost 20 years since.

From his earlier photographic work to the present day, Sam avoids the staged, instead photographing what presents itself in day-to-day life.  His portfolio is a subjective reportage of the lives of those closest to him.

Working primarily in black and white film, Sam strives to document the lives and activities of musicians, artists and skateboarders across Sydney and abroad.

In 2015 Sam presented his largest solo show at China Heights Gallery titled ‘Fake Nostalgia’ which contained almost 150 photos spanning a decade of his life.

Sam is represented by China Heights gallery and has also appeared in many group exhibitions at galleries around Sydney, including Lilac City Studios, Darren Knight Gallery and The Corner Shop Windows.

Sam’s latest photographic body of work ‘Bookmark’ at Pass~Port Store and Gallery is an ongoing collection of photographs which concentrate on the skateboarding side of his subjects. Throughout this exhibition, Sam explores themes of loss, hope and new beginnings.
